The Bench Trail to Balconies Cave is a 9.4-mile round trip from the east entrance that follows Chalone Creek through the valley before connecting to the Balconies Cave system on the park's west side. At 4–6 hours, it's the longest moderate-rated route in the park and a full day's effort.
Overview
This route crosses the breadth of Pinnacles from east to west, following the valley floor along Chalone Creek through riparian habitat and chaparral before reaching the Balconies Cave canyon. It's a quieter alternative to the High Peaks routes, with good wildlife and birding along the creek sections.
What to Expect
The trail starts at the east side Peaks View day use area and follows relatively flat terrain along the bench above Chalone Creek. A partial section between Peaks View and the South Wilderness Trail junction is wheelchair accessible. The cave section at the far end requires a flashlight and may have standing water or require wading in winter.
Tips & Logistics
Carry enough water for a full half-day — there's none along the trail. The cave may be temporarily closed due to flooding; check conditions at the visitor center before committing to this route. Start early in summer to avoid hiking back in afternoon heat. Allow at least 5 hours.
