Balconies Cliffs Trail to Balconies Cave Trail Loop

Pinnacles National Park, CA

The Balconies Cliffs to Balconies Cave Loop is a 2.4-mile circuit from the west entrance that pairs exposed ridge trail above the canyon with the talus cave below — two very different ways through the same formation. The cave section requires a flashlight and occasional wading in winter.

Overview

Balconies Cave formed when boulders fell from the canyon walls and jammed together, creating a tunnel through the rock. The loop links the open Balconies Cliffs trail above with the cave passage below, giving you a complete look at how this unusual landscape is structured. It's the best short route on the park's west side.

What to Expect

From the Chaparral Trailhead, the Balconies Cliffs trail traverses exposed rock above the canyon before descending into the cave passage. The cave involves scrambling between and under boulders, with low ceilings in places and full darkness at the deepest section. In winter, flooding can close the cave temporarily; wading may be required through some passages. The park posts current cave status at the trailhead.

Tips & Logistics

The west entrance is accessed from Highway 146 west of King City. Bring a flashlight — the cave goes fully dark. No reservations required for this trail. No water on trail. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons; summer midday on the exposed cliffs regularly exceeds 100°F.
