Overview

The tunnel is formed by Monterey cypress planted around 1930 along the road leading to a white Art Deco station built between 1929 and 1931. Monterey cypress is one of the few tree species suited to the wind and ocean weather of Point Reyes. The station served as the KPH Maritime Radio Receiving Station, sometimes called the Wireless Giant of the Pacific, and handled ship-to-shore communications through most of the 20th century. Over the decades the upper limbs grew together over the roadway to form the tunnel.

Know Before You Go

The tunnel is at the North District Operations Center along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. When parking on the shoulder, pull off the road completely so as not to block traffic. The nearest restrooms are at the Estero Trailhead and North Beach.
