Overview
The overlook sits on the cliffs of the Point Reyes Headlands, reached by a steep stairway of 54 steps down the side of the cliff. It lies about 1,120 feet east of the parking lot at the western end of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Benches and interpretive exhibits are on site.
Wildlife
California sea lions can be seen and heard here year-round on the rocks below. The overlook is a good gray whale watching site, with viewing strongest in April when cows and calves swim close to the coast on their northbound migration. In spring, nesting Brandt's cormorants gather on the rocks, recognizable by the bright blue throat pouch males develop in breeding season.
Know Before You Go
Stay behind the split-rail fencing. The overlook is one of several whale watching points along the headlands, along with the Point Reyes Lighthouse and Chimney Rock.
