Rainbow Falls is a 101-foot waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, about 2.5 miles downstream of Devils Postpile. Afternoon sun throws rainbows across its mist, which is how it got its name.

Overview
The falls drop over a cliff of rhyodacite, a volcanic rock that resists erosion better than the rock below it, which is why the river steps off here. Early afternoon on a sunny day is the best time to catch the rainbows in the spray.
What to Expect
The hike runs about 2.5 miles each way from the Devils Postpile ranger station, or shorter from the Rainbow Falls trailhead near Reds Meadow. Stairs and railed viewpoints overlook the drop, and a steeper path leads down to the pool at the base. Lower Falls lies a short distance downstream.
Getting There
Access is through the Reds Meadow valley west of Mammoth Lakes, which requires the mandatory shuttle in summer. Carry water and sun protection. Parts of the trail burned in the 1992 Rainbow Fire and remain exposed, with little shade.
