The Place
Homesteader H. Arden Edwards built the original structure and began filling it with artifacts he collected across the region; the state acquired it in 1979 and it became a public museum in 1932. The building's position atop the butte creates unusual split-level spaces with interior rock walls, and the exhibits flow through rooms dedicated to Great Basin cultures, Antelope Valley archaeology, and Southwest peoples. Kachina Hall contains an extensive kachina doll collection. The exhibits emphasize material culture, particularly baskets, textiles, and cordage that rarely survive in collections elsewhere.
A short nature trail on the grounds winds through Joshua trees, junipers, and cactus in the open Mojave.
