Año Nuevo hosts one of the largest mainland elephant seal colonies in the world, with up to 10,000 animals showing up annually to breed, give birth, and molt on the beaches and offshore island north of Santa Cruz. This is not passive wildlife viewing; you will hear, smell, and almost certainly be startled by a two-ton bull making his feelings known from twenty-six feet away.

The Place
The park occupies a rugged coastal peninsula 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. The marine terrace runs out to Año Nuevo Point, where the historic 1872 lighthouse keeper's house still stands on the island. The landscape includes coastal terrace prairie, wetlands, and dune fields; the San Francisco garter snake and California red-legged frog both live here.
When to Go
December through March is breeding and pupping season, when guided walks are mandatory and the colony is at peak numbers. These walks book out weeks in advance. April through November shifts to self-guided permits (free, obtained at the park 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM daily). Outside peak season, you'll still see animals on the beach; bulls in particular can show up year-round. No pets, including in cars.
Getting There
1 New Years Creek Road, Pescadero. Day-use fee: $10 per vehicle ($9 seniors). The hike to the viewing areas is 3-4 miles roundtrip over soft sand dunes; wear shoes you can walk in.
What to Do
The Año Point Trail is the main elephant seal route, moderate with varied terrain. Binoculars help for animals on the far beach and on the island. Docents are posted at viewing areas during the self-guided season. Equal Access Tours are available for visitors with mobility limitations; book through ReserveCalifornia.
Reservations & Fees
