The Camp
Fifteen sites spread through mixed conifer forest at nearly 7,000 feet, each equipped with table, fire ring, and grill. Large lodgepole pines and firs provide shade over the grassy understory, while wildflowers bloom through spring and summer. The setting feels more open than typical forest camps β appropriate for travelers with horses, mules, or other packstock who need room to maneuver.
Vault toilets are accessible, but there are no hookups. Firewood can be gathered on-site, which saves the trouble of hauling it in with your gear and animals.
What to Know
Stock users get access to multiple equestrian trails leading into the backcountry and Desolation Wilderness, with a trail map posted in camp. However, horses aren't permitted through the adjacent Wrights Lake Campground and day-use areas β plan your routes accordingly.
The nearby 40-acre lake offers trout fishing, swimming, and paddling. No motorboats allowed, which keeps things quiet. Educational programs run at the Wrights Lake amphitheater if you're looking for evening activities beyond the campfire.
Nearby
Desolation Wilderness permits for day trips are available at trailheads, while overnight permits require advance planning through the Pacific Ranger Station or online. Barrett Lake 4WD trail provides another recreation option for both motorized and non-motorized use, giving riders additional terrain to explore beyond the wilderness boundaries.
