Texas Flats sits closed indefinitely due to hazard trees, but when operational, it's one of the Sierra's better horse camps. Four group sites split between 20-30 people each line McGilvery Creek, with nearby logging roads doubling as equestrian trails.

The Camp
Texas Flats splits into four named sections β manzanita, red fir, white fir, and cedar β each handling groups of 20 to 30 people. The sites run along McGilvery Creek in the Highway 41 corridor of Bass Lake Ranger District, part of the Nelder Grove area known for its giant sequoias.
Each section comes with picnic tables and fire rings, plus vault toilets. No water hookups, so haul what you need. Despite the horse-friendly billing, there are no corrals or dedicated horse facilities β just access to the surrounding logging and forest roads that work as riding trails.
What to Know
The campground remains closed due to hazard trees with no reopening timeline. When it does reopen, expect this to be group reservation only given the 20-30 person minimum per site.
The location puts you in prime sequoia country. Shadow of the Giants trail runs just northwest β a one-mile walk through a grove of giant sequoias that's become the area's signature hike.
Nearby
Yosemite National Park makes for a solid day trip from here. Closer to camp, you can ride the historic logging train at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.
The Sierra Vista Scenic Byway (Sky Ranch Road) runs nearby β an 83-mile drive hitting the Sierra National Forest highlights. The byway connects the dots between the oak foothills, heavily forested middle elevations, and the alpine zones higher up.
