Tamarisk Grove Campground occupies a compact but well-designed loop off Highway 78, shaded by a mix of tamarisk trees and native desert shrubs. The 27 sites each come with a picnic table, shade ramada, and fire ring with metal grill—a bit more shelter than you'd expect at a desert campground. Coin-operated showers and flush toilets are available on site, though the water supply is non-potable so bring your own drinking water or fill up at Borrego Palm Canyon before arrival.

The campground's elevation of 1,400 feet takes the edge off the desert heat, and its position at the intersection of several short trails gives it outsized hiking value for its size. The Cactus Loop Trail wanders through a remarkable concentration of native cacti, while the 3-mile round-trip Yaqui Well Trail leads to a desert oasis that draws migrating birds in spring. The campground also serves as a staging point for longer forays into Pinyon Ridge and the Pinyon Mountains.

Trailers up to 21 feet can be accommodated—longer rigs should use Borrego Palm Canyon. There is no dump station here. Reservations are accepted through ReserveCalifornia from October 1 to April 30; the campground is open October 1 through May 31. Summer closures are firm—summer heat at this elevation routinely tops 100°F.

Weekend sites in winter book quickly, especially during peak wildflower season in late February and March. Weeknight arrivals in November and December often find availability with less advance planning.
