SPANISH CREEK CAMPGROUND

Plumas National Forest, CA

Spanish Creek sits right where the action is in Feather River Canyon — Highway 70 puts you minutes from Indian Falls, while Spanish Creek's swimming hole handles the heat at 2,000 feet elevation. Recent upgrades keep the infrastructure solid without losing the laid-back feel that's made this a repeat destination for decades.

The Camp

The campground spreads along Spanish Creek itself, with that popular swimming hole as the main draw. Sites handle both tents and RVs (no hookups), each with the standard table and fire ring setup. Vault toilets and drinking water keep things civilized, while the creek provides the soundtrack.

The location works in your favor: you're right on Highway 70 where it meets Highway 89, so access is dead simple. But you're also positioned where Banish Creek and Indian Creek merge to form the east branch of the North Fork Feather River, putting you in prime position for both the swimming hole and fishing access.

What to Know

Spanish Creek gives you a base camp for Feather River Canyon without the fuss. The nearby Feather River runs healthy with rainbow trout, and it's walking distance from your site. Both the river and Spanish Creek work for swimming and wading when the canyon heat kicks in.

Full services — store, gas, phone — sit less than 10 miles out, so you're not completely off-grid but still removed enough to feel like camping.

Nearby

Indian Falls ranks as the can't-miss attraction, just a few miles away. The mist pattern off the falls supposedly inspired the Feather River's name, and it's close enough for an easy day trip from camp.

Highway 70 southeast takes you to Quincy, a high Sierra town worth walking around if you need a change of pace. Closer to camp, Butterfly Valley Botanical Area offers exploring without the drive. The Mount Hough Ranger District sits between camp and Quincy for local intel on additional attractions and trail conditions.
