South Shore Campground sits on a wooded hillside above Lower Bear River Reservoir, where mixed conifers frame partial lake views through the trees. The 166-acre reservoir and its 2.5 miles of shoreline make this a solid choice for anglers chasing rainbow, brown, and mackinaw trout, with a boat ramp within a mile of camp.

Amenities
The Camp
Twenty-two group sites spread across a forested hillside at 5,900 feet, each equipped with picnic tables and grills. The mixed conifer setting provides decent shade, and some sites catch glimpses of Lower Bear River Reservoir through the trees. One site meets accessibility standards, matching one of the vault toilets. Drinking water is available on-site.
The campground's position on the south shore puts you close to the action without being right on top of the water β expect a short walk down to the lake from most sites.
What to Know
This is group camping only, with advance reservations required. The standard recreation.gov fees apply: $8 online, $9 by phone, $3 in person, plus the nightly site fee. Cancel within four days of arrival and you'll pay a $10 service fee plus forfeit your first night's payment.
A general store operates about a mile away on the reservoir's north end, useful for last-minute supplies or forgotten essentials.
On the Water
Lower Bear River Reservoir covers 166 acres β large enough for serious fishing and small watercraft, compact enough that you won't spend all day motoring between spots. The boat ramp sits within a mile of camp, making it easy to get boats and gear to the water.
Swimmers and canoeists share the reservoir with motorboats and fishing craft. The 2.5 miles of shoreline provide options for different activities without crowding.
Beyond Camp
The Pardoe Trail starts a short distance past Upper Bear River Reservoir, connecting to Mokelumne Wilderness for those looking to trade the car camping scene for backcountry miles.
