The Camp
This is the largest group setup in Crystal Basin Recreation Area, designed to handle everything from extended family reunions to scout troops. The campground works as one massive group site or divides into multiple single-family spots depending on how you reserve it. Each site comes with campfire rings and grills, plus there's a central group cooking area with prep tables and double grills for the bigger meals.
The South Fork of the Rubicon River runs within walking distance — close enough that water activities become part of camp life rather than a day trip. No drinking water on-site means you'll either boil river water or make the run to nearby boat ramps to fill up. Vault toilets handle the basics, and there's dedicated parking so you're not wrestling with where to put all those cars.
The Setting
At 5,200 feet, you're positioned between two of the area's main reservoirs. Union Valley Reservoir sits to one side, Loon Lake to the other, but the real draw is Gerle Creek Reservoir just five miles north. Motors are banned there, keeping it quiet for swimming and paddling — a rare thing in a region where powerboats dominate most waters.
The remote location in Eldorado National Forest means you're getting the full forest experience. This isn't a campground where you hear highway noise or see lights from town. It's the kind of place where the evening quiet actually feels quiet.
Planning Your Stay
The flexibility between group and family configurations makes this useful for groups that aren't quite sure how they want to organize. Book it as one big site if you want everyone together, or split it up if different families want their own space while staying close.
