Amenities
The Cabin
The Forest Service constructed this cabin in the early 1940s as living quarters for rangers stationed in the Sly Park area. Today it sits well-shaded among Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine, staying cool through summer days. A downhill dirt trail leads south to Sly Park Creek and the spillway at Sly Park Reservoir. The cabin grounds include a horseshoe pit, and Cedar Park's 1.2-mile paved loop trail starts just steps from the door.
What's Around
Cedar Park trail offers an easy walk with an observation deck that looks out toward Pyramid Peak and the Crystal Range. Sly Park Creek has a swimming hole and opportunities for gold panning. The reservoir draws boaters and anglers, and a resort about two miles away provides supplies, food, and fuel.
The Sly Park Environmental Education School operates across the street, running daily guided nature walks on the adjacent trail.
Day Trip Territory
This location puts you within range of Apple Hill's orchards and farm stands, various wineries, and the historic mining towns of Coloma and Placerville. It's less remote than other Forest Service cabins in the Eldorado, making it workable for families with children who want forest time without complete isolation from amenities and attractions.
