The Camp
Silver Fork spreads across 35 sites in a forest of pines and firs, with the South Fork American River running along the campground's edge. Most sites can handle RVs up to 40 feet, though the access roads wind enough that big rigs should scout their route first. Sites closer to the river offer the sound of moving water but less privacy, while those set back in the trees provide more seclusion from neighbors.
The campground sits at 5,500 feet elevation, which means cooler nights even in summer and a snow-free season that typically runs May through October. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and bear box β use it. This is active bear country.
What to Know
Reservations open five months ahead and fill quickly for summer weekends, especially sites near the water. Mid-week visits in June or September offer the best chance at snagging a riverside spot without advance planning. The campground operates on a first-come basis after Labor Day, when crowds thin but weather remains reliable.
Water and vault toilets are available, but no showers or hookups. The nearest supplies are in Pollock Pines, about 30 minutes down the hill on Highway 50.
Nearby
The river provides the main attraction β swimming holes deep enough for adults, with granite slabs perfect for sun-drying afterward. Fishing for rainbow and brown trout picks up in the evening, particularly in pools upstream from camp.
Several trails branch out from the area, including access to the Desolation Wilderness boundary about three miles upstream. The Ice House Reservoir, popular for boating and additional fishing, sits just a few miles north via Forest Service roads that handle passenger cars in dry conditions.
