The Camp

Sherwin Creek spreads across 85 sites organized in three main loops, all within walking distance of the creek. The tent-only walk-in sites occupy their own secluded loop on both sides of the water β€” a quieter alternative to the main camping areas. Sites sit on native surfaces under substantial shade from Jeffrey pines, with wild roses and seasonal flowers adding color through spring and early summer.

The creek defines the character here. Aspen line the banks, and the sound of running water carries through camp. At 7,600 feet, nights stay cool even in summer, and the forest setting provides natural air conditioning during hot valley days.

What to Know

Reservations are required for this popular campground. The proximity to Mammoth Lakes makes it a base camp for Sierra adventures without sacrificing convenience β€” you're close enough to resupply or grab a meal in town.

Wildlife moves through regularly: black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, and smaller species like pine martens and pikas. Standard bear precautions apply.

Nearby

The Valentine Lake Trail and other trailheads provide direct access to John Muir Wilderness from camp. OHV enthusiasts have trails and a motocross track right here β€” Sherwin Creek is specifically known as a hotspot for off-road riding.

Day trips reach Yosemite National Park, Mono Basin, and Devils Postpile National Monument. In mid-July, the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee brings crowds and music to the nearby town. The full-service community of Mammoth Lakes handles any supply needs and offers dining options after long trail days.
