Amenities
The Camp
Sawmill runs lean β vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and that's the list. No water on site, so plan accordingly. The eight sites handle RVs up to 16 feet, though this feels more like tent country given the setting and elevation.
At 5,200 feet, you're trading the valley heat for mountain air, which matters when summer temperatures climb. The campground sits in that sweet spot where you can still drive to camp but feel like you've left the city behind.
What to Know
First-come, first-served only. No reservations, no guarantees. The flip side: no crowds fighting over prime weekend spots months in advance.
Access requires attention to detail. Pine Canyon Road is your only route in β the washout on 7N23 has cut off the Old Ridge Route approach. Don't trust your GPS on this one; stick to Pine Canyon Road or risk finding yourself at a dead end.
The Acton Work Center at (661) 269-2808 has current conditions. Worth a call before making the drive, especially if recent weather has been rough.
Planning
Pack water for your entire stay. The elevation and lack of amenities mean this campground appeals to people comfortable with self-sufficient camping. If you need flush toilets, showers, or a camp store, look elsewhere.
The $5 nightly fee reflects what you get β basic infrastructure in a mountain setting without the resort-style touches that bump prices elsewhere in the system.
