Sage Hill serves large groups looking for a base camp near the Santa Ynez River. The equestrian site with 12 corrals makes it one of the few horse-friendly group options in Los Padres, while the flat terrain and oak shade work for families or organizations wanting river access without the backcountry commitment.

The Camp
The campground occupies flat ground in the Santa Ynez Mountain Range, with oak trees providing shade at some sites. Two group sites handle 50 people each, while the equestrian area accommodates up to 60 and includes 12 corrals plus hitching posts. The large parking area was built for horse trailers, though it works just as well for the usual convoy of group camping vehicles.
The Santa Ynez River runs nearby before continuing seven miles west to Cachuma Lake. Flush toilets, drinking water, and paved roads keep things civilized, though you'll need to drive to Cachuma Lake for the nearest dump station.
What to Know
Expect the landscape to dry out significantly by mid-summer β plan accordingly for water activities and fire restrictions. The river fishing produces carp, catfish, bluegill, and bass that migrate up from Cachuma Lake, though success varies with water levels and season.
Nearby
The Aliso Canyon Trail starts at the back of the campground and connects to Upper Oso Campground, where you can pick up the Santa Cruz Trail. Both hiking and horseback riding are permitted on these trails.
Cachuma Lake Recreation Area offers boating, fishing, and kayaking options beyond what the river provides. Santa Barbara sits 30 minutes away for resupply runs or beach time after your group camping stint ends.
