The Camp
Campsites spread across a low hill above Rock Creek Lake's blue water, with lodgepole pine and aspen providing scattered shade. The walk-in tent sites claim the prime real estate directly overlooking the lake, while other sites are well-spaced throughout the area. Bear-proof lockers come standard β black bears and mountain lions call this area home, along with mule deer, pine martins, and pika.
The 9,600-foot elevation means mountain views and cool nights even in summer. Firewood is available for purchase on-site.
On the Water
Rock Creek Lake produces brook, brown, rainbow, and stocked Alpers trout. Only electric motors are allowed on the water, keeping things relatively quiet. Boat rentals are available nearby, and backcountry anglers can chase golden trout in the high country streams.
Trail Access
The Tamarack Trail starts right in the campground and climbs to alpine lakes and ponds carved by glaciers. The John Muir Wilderness stretches for 100 miles along the Sierra crest from here, offering extensive hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities through deep canyons and glacially-carved terrain.
