RED FEATHER CALIFORNIA
Plumas National Forest, CARed Feather sits on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir at 5,100 feet, designed specifically for equestrian camping but welcoming all visitors. With lake access, trail connections to the Pacific Crest Trail, and some sites overlooking the 1,615-acre reservoir, it's the kind of mountain lake camp that keeps families coming back.

The Camp
The campground spreads across mixed-conifer forest and alpine meadows, with paved parking spurs at every site and the essential campfire rings and picnic tables. Several sites claim lake views, while others nestle into the characteristic pine and fir stands that surround Little Grass Valley Reservoir. Bear-resistant trash collection handles the wildlife reality of camping at this elevation.
Flush toilets and drinking water keep things civilized, though you won't find utility hookups. The reservoir itself was created by dam construction in the 1960s, flooding the original valley to create what's now a popular fishing and boating destination.
On the Water
The 1,615-acre lake serves up trout and kokanee salmon for anglers willing to purchase the required fishing licenses. Boaters can launch at the nearby Maidu boat launch ramp, adjacent to Little Beaver Campground, and water skiing joins the mix of lake activities along with swimming.
Trail Access
The 13.5-mile Lakeshore Trail loops the entire reservoir, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders—fitting for a campground with equestrian designation. Day hikers favor this route, and it connects to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail for those looking to stretch their legs on the 2,650-mile route between Canada and Mexico.
For a different pace, Fowler Lake sits about 12 miles northeast at 5,446 feet. This small, natural lily pond makes for solid day hikes and picnic destinations, offering a contrast to the reservoir's engineered shoreline.
Red Feather is one of eight campgrounds around Little Grass Valley, with private cabins dotting the south side of the lake. The Maidu Amphitheater nearby suggests this area sees its share of organized activity during peak season.
