The Camp
Obsidian Flat operates as one large group site rather than individual spots β your party gets the entire campground. The setup is fairly primitive: picnic table, vault toilet, campfire ring, and bear-proof locker for food storage. RVs up to 40 feet can fit, with space for five RVs total or 15 vehicles if you're going the tent route.
The campground takes its name from a nearby obsidian lava flow, a geological feature that hints at the volcanic history underlying this stretch of the eastern Sierra. Pine forest surrounds the site, with Deadman Creek running adjacent to the facility.
What to Know
The campground operates with seasonal staffing from May through September β call (760) 647-3044 during that window to reach local staff. Outside those months, the general information line is (760) 647-3005, though the site becomes unstaffed.
Wildlife moves through regularly. Black bear, mountain lions, mule deer, and pine marten all inhabit these mountains, making proper food storage in the provided bear lockers essential rather than optional.
Nearby
Deadman Creek offers trout fishing right from camp, part of the eastern Sierra's reputation for exceptional fishing. The Deadman Creek Trail provides direct access into the Ansel Adams Wilderness for hiking groups.
Several lakes sit down the road from the campground, expanding fishing and hiking options. Yosemite National Park makes a feasible day trip for groups wanting to add a national park experience to their Sierra visit.
