The Camp

The eight sites sit along a single loop close to the creek, shaded by cottonwood trees that turn vibrant yellow in fall. While the campground works best for tents, RVs under 20 feet can fit. Each site has a table and fire ring, with one vault toilet serving the camp. No drinking water on-site β€” pack your own.

The setting delivers: chaparral-covered mountains rise around the canyon, and that creek provides both ambient sound and swimming holes for hot days. Spring and fall hit different here when wildflowers cover the mountainsides, but the year-round season means winter camping is on the table.

The Trails

Lion Canyon Trail starts at the back of camp and becomes your gateway to the Sespe Wilderness. After 1.3 miles, the Rose Lion Connector splits right. Follow it 0.6 miles to reach side trails leading to East Fork Lion Camp or West Fork Lion Camp, both in the wilderness. The main trail continues 3.6 miles to Nordhoff Ridge for views. No bikes once you hit wilderness boundaries.

Nearby

One mile down Rose Valley Road sits the Piedra Blanca trailhead with three trail options across Sespe Creek. The Gene Marshall-Piedra Blanca Trail leads to massive white rock formations β€” easy walking for the first three miles into the Sespe Wilderness.

Rose Valley Falls, the tallest waterfall in the range, sits a half-mile walk from Rose Valley Campground. The lower 100-foot tier is an easy 0.8-mile round trip with 150 feet of gain, though the upper tier requires more commitment. The Sespe River Trail heads downstream into wilderness with swimming holes along the way. For mountain biking, the Middle Sespe Trail runs eight miles upriver to the west β€” wilderness rules keep bikes off the other routes.
