McGill sprawls across 73 individual sites at 7,300 feet in the Pinos Mountains, where Jeffrey pine and ponderosa pine throw serious shade over well-spaced campsites. The elevation and dense forest canopy make this a solid escape from valley heat, with mountain and valley views as the backdrop.

The Camp
Dense stands of Jeffrey and ponderosa pine define McGill's character β this isn't sparse high-country camping but proper forest cover at elevation. Each of the 73 individual sites gets breathing room from neighbors, with standard picnic table and fire ring setups. The two group camps handle larger parties, with Group Camp 1 parking 13 vehicles and Group Camp 2 accommodating 10, each centered around shared barbecue and gathering areas.
The 7,300-foot elevation puts you in mixed tall pine forest with valley views stretching out below. It's quiet up here, removed enough from civilization to feel remote but accessible within an hour's drive.
What to Do
Three trails launch from camp or nearby: the accessible Exploration Trail, Mount Pinos Trail, and the McGill Campground Trail itself. The McGill trail covers 3.7 miles and allows both hiking and biking through the surrounding scenery.
For a longer drive, the Jacinto Reyes National Scenic Byway passes cliffs, rock formations, and riparian zones β worth the trip if you're staying multiple days and want to see more of the Los Padres backcountry.
The combination of elevation, forest cover, and trail access makes McGill work for groups wanting a base camp in the pines, whether you're here for the mountain biking or just need cooler temperatures and some distance from the coast.
