The Camp

The 38 sites spread across oak-shaded terrain with enough vegetation and spacing to feel private rather than packed in. Each spot comes with the standard table and fire ring setup, plus pedestal grills for those who prefer cooking off the ground. No hookups available, so plan accordingly for water and power needs.

The equestrian designation means you'll share the area with horse trailers and riders, which adds to the authentic mountain camp feel but isn't for everyone. Sites are roomy enough to handle the larger rigs that horse people typically bring.

Water and Trails

The Santa Ynez River flows within walking distance β€” access it at White Rock Day Use Area less than half a mile from camp. The river draws people for swimming, wading, and general cooling off during warm weather.

Trail options range from quick loops to serious mileage. The Aliso National Recreation Trail starts near camp and makes a 2.5-mile circuit, good for morning walks or evening stretches. More ambitious hikers can tackle the 18-mile Santa Cruz Trail, which connects to the broader trail network. Mountain bikers and OHV riders have the Camuesa Route and connecting trails within 10 miles.

What to Know

Reservations required, and given the proximity to Santa Barbara (19 miles), weekend spots fill up. Winter season means avoiding the scorching summer heat that bakes these foothills. Cachuma Lake sits 10 miles northwest if you want reservoir fishing for stocked trout, bass, and carp, plus no-wake boating and kayaking.

The mature oak canopy provides genuine shade, a commodity in this part of California. Flush toilets and potable water on-site, so you're not roughing it completely.
