Little Stony

Mendocino National Forest, CA

Eight sites tucked into chaparral country with a drainage running through, Little Stony caters to the off-road vehicle crowd. At $5 a night, it's bare-bones camping that works if you're here to ride Forest Service roads and trails, not commune with pristine wilderness.

🚻Vault Toilets

The Camp

This is utilitarian camping β€” 11 picnic tables, fire rings, and two vault toilets serving eight sites that can handle RVs up to 24 feet. Mixed conifers provide some relief from the chaparral, and the drainage adds a bit of character to what's otherwise a straightforward staging area for motorized recreation.

What to Know

First-come, first-served only, so show up and claim your spot. Payment happens on-site through the Recreation.gov mobile app's scan-and-pay feature β€” download it before you arrive since cell service gets spotty out here. The Stonyford Work Center at (530) 963-3128 has current trail conditions and closure information for the Grindstone District.

Winter brings the best stream fishing when water levels are up. The rest of the year, this place exists for OHV users taking advantage of the Forest Service roads and trails developed with California's Green Sticker fund. State registration requirements apply β€” you need current Green or Red Sticker or highway license. Spark arresters are mandatory, sound levels capped at 96 decibels, and all the usual safety rules about helmets, supervision of minors, and no riding under the influence.

Nearby

Little Stony OHV Staging Area sits close by, your launching point for the area's trail system. The Stonyford Area Motor Vehicle Opportunity Guide has the details on where you can legally ride.
