HOLIDAY GROUP CAMPGROUND

Los Padres National Forest, CA

Holiday Group Campground sits at the bottom of Live Oak Canyon, where Matilija Creek flows past a single large site that handles up to 50 people. The heavily shaded spot at 2,120 feet makes a solid base for groups wanting creek access and trail connections without the full backcountry commitment.

The Camp

This is Los Padres' answer to group camping β€” one large site tucked into Live Oak Canyon with parking for 10 vehicles. Matilija Creek runs close enough that some spots catch the sound of flowing water, and a small swimming hole sits nearby for those willing to brave mountain creek temperatures. The heavy shade cover makes this workable even in summer heat, though you'll need to haul in your own water since none is available on-site.

The vault toilets handle the basics, and campfires are allowed with the usual cautions. At $150 per night, you're paying for the creek access and the convenience of fitting your entire extended family or outdoor club in one reservation.

What to Know

This is reservation-only territory, and with just one site, booking windows matter. The campground stays open year-round, but creek flow and trail conditions shift with the seasons. Spring brings wildflowers along the nearby Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail, while fall and winter offer cooler temperatures for the more demanding hikes.

The creek fishing runs to trout, though it's unstocked and described as "rough" β€” manage expectations accordingly. Skip any plans for kayaking or canoeing; the creek doesn't support it.

Nearby

Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail starts close to camp β€” a short loop through thick vegetation along the creek banks that climbs to hillside views. For something with more bite, the 10-mile Ortega Trail tackles rocky, steep terrain up to the ridgetop, designed for off-road vehicles and experienced riders.

Ojai sits 15 miles away for resupply runs, with Ventura another 5 miles south if you need full services. The Pacific Ocean is within striking distance from Ventura, making this a decent inland base for groups splitting time between mountains and coast.
