Four Jeffrey delivers the high Sierra experience without the crowds of the more famous lakes basins. At 8,100 feet on Bishop Creek, you get shade, mountain views, and direct access to John Muir Wilderness trailheads, plus the bonus of four species of trout practically at your tent door.

The Camp

Four Jeffrey spreads across 106 sites in a valley pinched between Grouse Mountain and Table Mountain, with the South Fork of Bishop Creek running through camp. Most sites sit under decent shade with Table Mountain providing the backdrop. Each site comes standard with picnic table, food storage locker, and fire ring with grill β€” the essentials covered without fuss.

The campground caters specifically to equestrian groups, so expect to share the area with horse trailers and riders heading into the backcountry. A fish cleaning station on-site signals the priorities here: this is base camp for anglers and wilderness access, not a destination unto itself.

What to Know

Reservations are required for the $34 nightly fee. At this elevation, nights stay cool even in summer, and weather can change quickly. The creek provides the camp's soundtrack and keeps the air fresh, but also means some humidity and bugs during peak season.

Nearby

The real draw sits just up the road: Tyee Lakes Trailhead less than a mile away opens up the John Muir Wilderness. The trail serves up views of the Inconsolable Range and the peaks ringing South Lake. For those preferring to stay closer to camp, Bishop Creek holds rainbow, brown, brook, and Alpers trout.

The John Muir Trail connection means you can access Devils Postpile, though that's a serious undertaking from this starting point. Four Jeffrey works better as a fishing and day-hiking base than a launching pad for extended wilderness trips, unless you're planning to go in on horseback.
