Amenities
The Camp
The campground sits in an open meadow surrounded by oaks and sandstone rock formations, with the diverse forest mix of ponderosa pine, oak, madrone, and sycamore creating a varied canopy. Each of the nine sites includes a picnic table and fire ring, with two vault toilets serving the campground. The Arroyo Seco River runs through the nearby canyon, close enough to access but not so close that you'll hear it from camp.
This is horse-friendly territory with hitching posts at the trailhead, though the equestrian designation doesn't mean non-horse campers can't reserve sites. The meadow setting provides good space between sites without feeling cramped.
What to Know
Reservations are required, and at $30 per night, you're paying for the location and trail access more than amenities. There's no potable water on site and no dump station, so come prepared to be self-sufficient. The campground stays open year-round, which is worth noting since many Los Padres sites close seasonally.
The "hidden treasure" reputation isn't marketing speak β this campground genuinely flies under the radar compared to more accessible Los Padres destinations.
Nearby
Trailheads near camp provide direct access to hiking, biking, and horseback riding routes into the surrounding sandstone landscapes. The location puts you within range of additional trails just a short drive away for backpacking and more extensive day hiking options.
For a dose of history, San Antonio Mission sits within a 15-minute drive β one of California's oldest missions and a worthwhile detour if you're not completely focused on backcountry pursuits.
