East Fork Campground – Inyo National Forest (CA)

Inyo National Forest, CA

East Fork sits in the wooded section of Rock Creek Canyon at 8,900 feet, where four loops of campsites spread through pine and fir forest along the creek banks. The mix of creekside and interior sites makes it work for both anglers chasing trout and families wanting a solid eastern Sierra base camp.

The Camp

Four loops give you options here — some sites cluster together for the social crowd, others sit right along Rock Creek's banks for the sound of running water. The forest mix of pine, fir, and aspen creates decent shade in most spots, though you'll find sun-drenched sites too. At 8,900 feet, the air stays crisp even in summer, and those aspens put on a proper gold show come fall.

Bear-proof lockers are scattered throughout since black bears work this drainage regularly. The creek runs clear and cold, fed by snowmelt from the John Muir Wilderness 22 miles upstream.

The Fishing

Rock Creek delivers on the trout front. Brook, brown, rainbow, and stocked Alpers trout work the main stem, while backcountry lakes hold golden trout for those willing to hike. The creek originates in wilderness country and maintains that cold, clean character all the way down the canyon.

What to Know

Firewood is available on-site, which saves the hassle of sourcing it in town. Opening and closing dates shift with weather patterns — snow can linger well into spring this high up and return early in fall.

The campground's size means it can handle groups and busy weekends, but those same numbers can make it feel crowded during peak season. Wildlife beyond bears includes mountain lions, mule deer, pine marten, and pika.
