Deer Valley Campground

Mendocino National Forest, CA

Deer Valley Campground keeps things simple: seven sites, vault toilets, and a $6 nightly fee that won't break the bank. It's strictly first-come, first-served, so your camping plans depend on showing up and hoping for an open spot.

The Setup

With only seven sites, this isn't the kind of place where you'll disappear into a sea of RVs and pop-ups. Each site comes with the basics β€” a picnic table and fire ring β€” plus access to vault toilets. The small footprint means you're camping with a handful of neighbors at most.

What to Know

No reservations, no exceptions. You need to physically drive to the campground to claim a site, which means backup plans are smart if you're traveling far. The payment system runs through a QR code that connects to the Recreation.gov mobile app, but here's the catch: download the app before you arrive. Cell service in remote forest areas can be spotty to nonexistent, and trying to download apps over a weak signal is an exercise in frustration.

Once you're on-site with the app ready, the Scan and Pay feature handles the transaction. At six bucks a night, it's one of the cheaper developed camping options you'll find.

The first-come system means weekends and summer months will fill up faster, especially given the limited capacity. Midweek visits or shoulder seasons give you better odds of snagging a spot without the dawn patrol routine.
