CHINA CAMP CAMPGROUND

Los Padres National Forest, CA

China Camp sits under a thick canopy of pines where the sweet smell of resin greets you before you've even parked. The spacious sites give you breathing room from neighbors, and the quiet runs deep enough that bird songs and cricket chirps become the dominant soundtrack.

The Camp

Ten sites spread across two seasonal tiers β€” sites 1 through 5 stay open year-round, while sites 6 through 10 close when summer ends. The pine and oak canopy provides reliable shade, and the rolling hills around camp host the usual central coast wildlife: black-tailed deer, bobcats, coyotes, plus red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures working the thermals overhead.

The campground works for tent and car camping but skip it if you're pulling anything over 20 feet. Fire rings are provided, though local restrictions can shut down campfires entirely during dry spells. Two vault toilets sit near the bulletin board, but that's where the amenities end.

What to Know

No water on-site means hauling everything you need for the duration. No dump station either, so plan accordingly. The year-round sites give you flexibility for shoulder-season visits when the upper tier closes down.

Nearby

Pine Ridge Trail starts directly across from the campground bulletin board β€” a 23-mile route that climbs into views of the Santa Lucia range and its oak-covered slopes. Additional hiking and biking trails sit within a 10 to 15-minute drive, making this a solid base camp for day trips into the surrounding backcountry. The area draws backpackers and mountain bikers looking to explore the network of trails threading through Los Padres.
