CERRO ALTO CAMPGROUND
Los Padres National Forest, CACerro Alto sits in a mixed oak, pine, and sycamore forest along a seasonal creek, putting you 22 sites deep into a verdant canyon at 1,000 feet. The 4-mile trail to Cerro Alto Peak starts right from camp, and Morro Bay's beaches are less than 10 miles down the hill. It's built for horses but works for anyone wanting Central Coast access without the coastal campground crowds.

The Camp
The 22 sites spread along narrow, winding paved roads through the canyon, each with a table, fire ring, and grill. Vault toilets and drinking water are available, but no hookups β this is tent and dry RV territory. The forest canopy provides natural screening between sites, and the seasonal creek adds to the canyon atmosphere when flowing.
The roads require attention: single-lane and winding with turnouts to reach each site. Larger RVs can make it work, but the access favors smaller rigs and tents. As an equestrian campground, you'll likely share space with horse trailers and riders heading out on the local trail network.
What to Know
Reservations are required for the $35 nightly fee. The campground sits close enough to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo for resupply runs, but far enough into the hills to feel removed from coastal bustle. The location works particularly well for splitting time between inland trails and beach activities.
Nearby
The Cerro Alto Trail begins within the campground and climbs 4 miles to the peak, offering 360-degree views of the Central California coast and inland valleys. Mountain bikers and hikers share the area trail system.
Morro Bay's beaches provide the coastal contrast β wide sand stretches with surfing, fishing, kayaking, and an 18-hole golf course. The campground also positions you within range of Paso Robles wine country (20 miles), San Luis Obispo, Cayucos, Harmony, and Cambria (all within 35 miles). Hearst Castle tours and the day spas at Avila and Grover beaches are additional options, along with Pismo Beach's off-road vehicle trails.
