The Camp

The setup here is institutional but functional. Eleven screened sleeping cabins handle the core accommodation, with additional tent sites scattered under the small conifer forest. The infrastructure runs deeper than most group camps: hot showers, dish washing facilities, an amphitheater, and four large grills backed by prep tables and secure storage. Two cabanas with picnic tables provide covered gathering space.

The mature tree cover is the real draw — sycamores, oaks, and cottonwoods create genuine shade, not the token saplings you find at newer campgrounds. The Sacramento River flows close enough that you can hear it from camp.

What to Know

This is reservation-only territory, no walk-ups accepted. The proximity to Red Bluff (two miles) means real resupply options and services, making it practical for longer stays or groups with varying comfort levels.

The 4.2-mile paved nature trail starts from camp and winds through grasslands, wetlands, and oak woodlands. Views stretch to Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen, and the Yolla Bolly Mountains on clear days. The Sacramento River offers the full range of water activities — fishing for chinook, steelhead, and striped bass, plus boating, water skiing, and swimming.

Nearby

Red Bluff Recreation Area includes day use areas and the Sacramento River Discovery Center, worth the visit if you're traveling with kids or want the natural history context. The location puts you within striking distance of major Northern California destinations: Redding (34 miles), Lake Shasta (40 miles), and Lassen Volcanic National Park (60 miles). Rolling Hills Casino sits 25 miles away if that's your scene.

The campground works as a staging point for day trips or a destination in itself if your group wants easy river access without the logistics of backcountry camping.
