Burnt Rancheria sits at 6,000 feet in the Laguna Mountains, 50 miles east of San Diego on the Sunrise Scenic Byway. The equestrian-friendly campground trades coastal heat for pine-and-oak shade, with Pacific Crest Trail access and desert views that stretch to the Salton Sea.

The Camp

Several loops of campsites wind through heavy woods of pines and oaks, each with table and fire ring but no hookups. The setting mixes dense forest with open oak groves, and the 6,000-foot elevation means cooler temperatures when the desert below bakes. Sites accommodate horses β€” this is designated equestrian camping in Cleveland National Forest.

Restrooms and coin-operated showers serve the campground, though showers only operate during reservation season. The camp host sells firewood on-site. If you're running an RV, the nearest dump station is 4 miles east of Pine Valley at Buckman Springs Rest Area on I-8.

The Trails

The Pacific Crest Trail runs right through the area, giving hikers and equestrians access to the 2,650-mile route from Mexico to Canada. A short walk reaches Desert View Picnic Site, where you can look down 6,000 feet to the desert floor. On clear days, the Salton Sea appears to the southeast.

Self-guided interpretive trails offer an easier option β€” pick up brochures from the camp host. During summer, the campground runs guided hikes and campfire programs for families.

What to Know

The campground operates mid-April through October, requiring reservations. Summer brings the full program of activities plus Saturday night "star parties" organized by San Diego State University Observatory β€” call 619-473-8547 for the schedule or check at the Visitor Information Center on Laguna Mountain.

Spring and fall avoid summer crowds while keeping trail access and mountain weather. The Laguna Mountain Recreation Area draws day users, but the equestrian designation keeps this campground focused on horse campers and PCT hikers rather than casual car camping.
