Boulder Oaks splits the difference between horse camp and family getaway, sitting at 3,300 feet in Cleveland National Forest about an hour from San Diego. The Pacific Crest Trail runs right through camp, making this a rare spot where you can step from your tent onto one of America's premier long-distance trails.

The Camp

Two loops keep things organized: equestrian sites with corrals on one side, family sites on the other. Oak and manzanita provide shade at this elevation, while the surrounding mountains show off classic Southern California chaparral β€” sagebrush dotting the slopes, wildflowers painting the landscape in spring and early summer. Each loop has its own vault toilet, keeping facilities simple but functional.

The elevation puts you in prime bird-watching territory, with both local species and migrants passing through. You're also camping in habitat for the endangered Arroyo Toad, a reminder that this corner of Cleveland National Forest supports more than just recreation.

On the Trail

The Pacific Crest Trail's 2,650-mile journey from Mexico to Canada passes directly through Boulder Oaks, giving you immediate access without driving to a trailhead. Whether you're section hiking or just want to say you walked part of the PCT, this is your chance. Horseback riders have even more options β€” Cleveland National Forest allows horses on all roads and trails except designated nature trails.

Day hiking works just as well if you're not bringing stock. The PCT here offers a taste of the trail's character without committing to a multi-day push, and the mountain setting provides the kind of views that justify the drive from San Diego.
