Aspen Grove Campground (CA)

Lassen National Forest, CA

Aspen Grove strips camping down to essentials: tents only, no RVs, no generators. Set in mature conifers with aspen groves between your site and Eagle Lake's shoreline, it's the quieter alternative to the area's other campgrounds. If you want lakefront camping without the buzz of boat motors idling next to your morning coffee, this is your spot.

The Camp

The tent-only rule changes everything here. Without RVs dominating the real estate, sites feel more integrated into the mature pine and fir forest. Aspen trees create a natural screen between campsites and Eagle Lake's shoreline at 5,100 feet elevation. Each of the 28 sites comes with a table and fire ring with grill β€” standard issue, but the setting elevates the experience.

Sites 11-28 take reservations, while sites 1-10 operate first-come, first-served for walk-ins. Wheelbarrows are provided to haul gear from parking to your site, a small hassle that keeps the campground feeling less developed than it actually is.

What to Know

The campground sits adjacent to Gallatin Beach Day Use Area's designated swim zone β€” convenient for lake access, though expect day-use crowds during peak season. A 5.2-mile paved trail connects all five campgrounds and facilities in the Eagle Lake Recreation Area, useful for exploring without breaking camp.

Eagle Lake holds California's third-largest natural lake at 22,000 acres, and fishing for Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout β€” a California Heritage Trout β€” drives most of the activity. No restrictions on 2-cycle motors or PWCs, so expect boat traffic during the day.

The Eagle Lake Marina provides gas, propane, supplies, showers, and laundry facilities. Firewood is available for purchase, and the campground has flush toilets and potable water.

Nearby

Eagle Lake sits where the Sierras meet the Cascades and the Modoc Plateau, creating diverse landscapes and wildlife viewing opportunities. The Osprey Overlook offers scenic views of the lake's southern end and surrounding forest basin, accessible by car or foot.

Lassen Volcanic National Park makes a solid day trip from the recreation area. The broader Lassen National Forest provides miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and OHV riding, plus winter snowmobiling opportunities.
