Almanor sits on the west shore of its namesake 28,000-acre lake, offering both individual and group camping with direct water access. The mixed conifer setting provides a mix of shaded sites and open meadow areas, making it a solid choice for families wanting lake activities without giving up forest camping.

Amenities
The Camp
The campground spreads across varied terrain β some sites tucked under conifers, others opening onto grassy meadows that bloom with wildflowers. You'll find both tent and RV sites (no hookups), plus a dedicated group area and an on-site amphitheater. The rocky beach adjacent to camp has patches of sand, and a boat ramp sits next to the north section of the campground.
Each site comes with the standard table and fire ring setup. Vault toilets and drinking water are available, though parking can be tight. The elevation here is 4,540 feet, so nights cool down even in summer.
On the Water
Lake Almanor's size β 28,000 acres β means room for everything from quiet paddling to water skiing. The fishing is varied: trout, bass, salmon, and catfish all live in these waters, and nearby streams add more angling options. With the boat ramp right at camp, you can be on the water quickly.
The Trail
The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail starts within the campground and runs roughly 11 miles along the west shore. It's non-motorized only, open to hikers and cyclists, and offers views of the lake, Dyer Mountain, and Lassen Peak through the forest.
What to Know
Most sites operate first-come, first-served, so arrival timing matters during busy periods. Chester sits 12 miles away for supplies and meals. The combination of lake access, trail proximity, and forest setting makes this a practical base camp for families mixing water and land activities.
